Dog earns keep on Green Acres Farm

Yesterday we went back to the teenager roosters and they had gotten out of their pen. Out of 7 roosters we found 3. I thought Maggie was going to have a heart attack since we can’t seem to keep our polish chicks alive until fair. We had three this year and they were all gone. Eventually back in the woods we found all but one Polish.

This morning Maggie took Nola out for her morning outing and Nola went back in the woods and wouldn’t come back. Maggie went after her and she was right beside the other Polish chick! She wouldn’t leave until Maggie picked it up!!! Can you believe that?

How did that happen?

All of a sudden spring is here! I have no idea how it came so fast but this week the grass greened up and we have many baby animals. Pheobe is back building her nest on our front porch light instead of the nice safe nesting box that is there for her. The pool is thawing out and in need of some maintenance. The barn is getting cleaned out one wheelbarrow load at a time. The chickens are laying appropriate amounts again. I guess all that we need now is to post some pictures.

New Snow

We’ve had a nice amount of snow lately.  Our neighbor Joel has been nice enough to come over and help Jay clean up the driveway.  They used his tractor and stacked the snow up in one pile  and actually moved the pile further back in the grass.  When spring comes we won’t get as flooded in the garage because of this.  Starting tonight we will have nonstop snow for three days.  It should total 11 inches by the end.

Your llamas are out

I just received a call from my neighbor Becky.  We talk occasionally so I thought maybe she was calling to see what our plans were for the holidays.  Or sometimes she finds interesting things for the kids to look at.  Not today.  Her call informed me that a guy had stopped by her house and told her that the llamas were in the road.  She called me and thankfully my friend Candace was visiting to stay with Caelynn inside while Maggie, James, Rachel and I ran out to see exactly what kind of situation we were getting into.  American Hero was standing at the top of the driveway looking down at us.  He was in the road and had two cars stopped.  Leroy Brown was meandering up to our neighbors across the streets house.  Nice!  They have tons of pine trees that he might not be found in.  I am not sure what I was thinking because I had nothing in my hands to catch them with.  Hero could not be coaxed back down without his buddy.  He ran down the street.  I had James come with me and the girls went on a mission to get Leroy back down the hill.  I grabbed halters, leads, grain bucket, grain and a long stick to herd them down the hill.  I found the key to the outside gate and we made a plan of action.  I got the car out (thinking Hero was long gone down the street) and got as far as the end of the driveway.  A  guy with a double snow plow had stopped and was directing traffic and helping the kids.  I am running with grain and the leads with snow up to my knees.  I also have to add that I have garden clogs on.  By the time I get to Leroy, Maggie had Hero in the gate.  She had grabbed him with her coat and was using the sleeves as a lead.  James runs to the side gate to close it so Hero doesn’t run right back out.  Maggie coaxes Leroy in the fence with me running behind.  I close and lock the gates and breathe.  The kids did great.  Now WHO left that gate unlocked?

It's that time

The weather has been a real treat these last few months. Usually by this time it’s been down in the 20′s. We had a spell in October for a few days that was chilly then it just warmed up.    Jay and Maggie put the electric heaters back on the water buckets yesterday because of the ice. I don’t think there is any more warming up until spring this time.

Pesky animals and not so pesky

We’ve had two cats lately that have wondered in our yard.  No body seems to own them around us.  Maggie our animal lover is determined to catch these animals and has been setting live traps to make sure we don’t have lots of kittens around.  The latest cat seems to be trap smart.  So far we’ve caught a rabbit and then last night we caught a creature that she has fallen in love with.   A 12 year old falling in love with a wild animal.  Do you have an idea in your mind what it could be?  I’ll bet opposum didn’t enter your mind.  The only problem with this is that opposum eat chickens which is right where she caught it.  We’ve had several mystery dissapearances of the chickens this fall.  Maybe we’ve caught the culprit.

Today we woke up to 21 turkeys milling around the yard.  Don’t they know it’s Thanksgiving?

Felting class coming up soon

On Friday November 27, 2009 we will have Sheila Fugina from Shady Ridge Farm here at the farm demonstrating llama fiber hat making.  The kits are 20 dollars and you will need to bring two towels for your own personal use.  Please leave a comment  if you will be coming.

The New Site

Thanks to @carmatter for helping us get the site going.  I think the colors are starting to look pretty spiffy and the logo is amazing at least in our humble opinion.  I guess you shouldn’t brag about your own site.  Anyway I think @carmatter has found another calling.

Meet one of our two Llamas.  This is American Hero.

Fall is here!!

Fall has finally hit our fair town.  It’s amazing how the temperature goes from 70′s to 50′s seemingly overnight.  The winterizing list that Sheri keeps track of has increased in priority.  We’ve got the meat birds out in the chicken tractor and are thinking about heat for our layers.  I’m thinking I’m going to be busy for the next few weeks.
